One of the many things I like about going to college is the abundant opportunity for new beginnings. This can happen at any time of the year but as each new Fall semester rolls in there are particularly clean slates for everyone. It’s like New Years in August. So the question is, who do you want to be?
While running this morning I was listening to Sister Hazel’s “Change Your Mind” (lyrics). I really like what the song has to offer. “If you’ve had enough of all your tryin, just give up the state of mind you’re in. If you want to be somebody else, if you’re tired of fighting battles with yourself, if you want to be somebody else, change your mind.” Change your mind. To me it’s not about becoming “somebody else” but becoming myself as I’d like somebody else to know me. Changing your mind is easier said than done, I know, but what I’ve come to discover is that the secret is in the small steps. It’s the sanding between layers of paint which make a surface shine. So that’s my goal, changing my mind and sanding down the rough spots.
So what are my rough spots? (Asked as if it would be hard to find them =) Timidity. I will be less timid with my ambitions. There are ideas I’ve had in the back of my mind for far too long now and they need to be taken care of. Fitness. I need be in shape again. Yes, I’ll be sitting at a desk for the rest of my life. No, that doesn’t mean I have to look like it. Other rough edges I’ll talk about next time. The point of this blog is simply that new beginnings are abound…
So here’s to new slates and a new school year this August… what will yours have to say? =)
