I’ve been made aware that these parts were getting dusty — and that reading about a broken internet connection isn’t very stimulating. Haha, so let’s see if I can fix that. I’ve not used this space to speak of anything political yet… and that’s about to change.
Can hatred breed love? Can there be peace where there is hate? I tend to believe differently, and when I do I have no understanding how war is ever an answer. Especially not now, not us. We are the United States of America. We are a beacon of light, of freedom, and of power to the world and yet we choose to use our power ($186 billion dollars of it) to do what? To kill ~24,000 Iraqi civilians (Civilians is such an impersonal term when talking about death. Mothers, children, women and men alike. You and me… civilians)? We’re spending upwards of 5 billion dollars a month for 1,744 American deaths? We are the country in the world with the highest potential to do whatever we dreamed to do… and we invade foriegn lands and invoke “liberating” deaths. What makes George Bush’s command to kill Iraqis any more right than Saddam doing the same? George Bush’s intention for civilians not to be killed? Last time I checked that didn’t fly in most manslaughter cases. “Oh… but I really didn’t mean to drop that 4,000 pound bomb in the middle of a wedding.” No, I’m not such a bleeding liberal that I am trying to say George Bush and Saddam Hussein are just as bad as one another. They are both just big reasons for unnecessary deaths.
My point is simply that war isn’t the answer. What seems to be so hard to understand is that when one leaf kills another leaf in the tree of humanity we are only killing ourselves. We are all leaves of the same tree. We all grow from the same source. Whether this source is God’s creation, Allah’s workings, some spiritual source, or magic… who am I to say. The bottom line is until we can see people wearing turbans and straw hats, people with different colors of skin, people with more or less money than us, everyone, as leaves of the same tree… we’re only hating and killing ourselves.
So I leave this topic with two brief quotes:
“There is no way to peace, peace is the way.” -Gandhi
“Peace be with you.” -The Bible: Genesis XLIII. 23
Now, hopping off my soap box, I’d like to put the spotlight on a particular vocal artist of whom I’ve recently had the pleasure of befriending. I’d like to share a piece of amazing music with you. (Don’t worry, it’s legal.) This anonymous, highly talented singer will be arriving in Chapel Hill this coming Fall so keep your ears open for her. Without further adieu… an adaptation of one Sarah McLachlan’s masterpieces… “You do what you have to do.” Trust me… you’ll be moved.
